Théâtre dans la p’tite école
L’histoire de l’École Union Point
The history of Union Point School; A one-room school play
An interactive experience
Hide your books…the Inspector is coming!
In 1916, French was abolished as a language of instruction in Manitoba. The government may have been prepared to ensure English-only education in schools, but proud French families were even more so prepared and determined to preserve their language and culture. Whether it was hiding their French books or memorizing song and prayer in English, no feat was too great.
A year later, we find ourselves at Union-Point School, a one-room school where school subjects of all levels are taught by one teacher in one classroom. However, teaching in French is forbidden and must be done in secret.
When their teacher, Mlle Jolicoeur is late for class, Émile, 10, and his sister Gabrielle, 13 take over to educate their new classmates about the history of Union Point school, the abolition of French-language instruction in Manitoban schools, and to warn them of the imminent arrival of. . .the Inspector.
Spectators will have the opportunity to delve into the secret world of Manitoba schools back when teaching in French was a risky act for educators. Taking on the role of students seated at the desks within the actual Union-Point School classroom, spectators will enjoy interactions with the actors and will be able to participate in the action taking place around them.
Filled with humour, drama and suspense, this interactive experience will keep spectators on their toes and entertained all while teaching them the rich history of French-language education of Manitoba schools.
